Shoot Many Robots is a 2D side scrolling shooter, in the vein of Contra or Metal Slug. Shoot Many Robots was developed by Demiurge Studios and published by Ubisoft. In this game you take control of a regular man who has one goal in life, to shoot a lot of robots. There are a total of 14 levels in the game, six of which are on the normal difficulty. IF you wish you can continue your adventure on ‘Hard’ or ‘Insane’, both of which are ridiculously hard. To make these harder difficulties more doable, play with up to 3 friends with either local or online multiplayer.

The main part of Shoot Many Robots is the customization you can do to your character. You have five aspects that you can customize, Main Gun, Secondary Gun, Hat, Torso, and Legs. Each of these categories has numerous items for you to choose from which become purchasable when you hit a certain level requirement. Each item has stats attached to it; stats like accuracy, rate of fire, damage, and some humorous ones as well. Speaking of humor the writing in Shoot Many Robots, while sparse, is extremely humorous. Each item has a description that describes each weapon or item in a pretty funny way. The ending sequence is pretty well written and got a chuckle out of me.

Main gameplay is pretty straight forward, you shoot in the direction you are moving unless you hold a button down to lock your movement giving you free aim. Great strat, try locking your movement down and shoot all the robots. There are some other movement options which are given to you but different items that you equip. You can get a glide or a slide. I used plants with the ability to slide for the entirety of the game as it is a good way to control a group of robots. The glide was not as useful as the slide but it ended up doing more harm than good.

The art-style is very similar to Borderlands as it has a cell shaded art-style and the character you play as even kind of looks like Brick from Borderlands. While there are 14 total levels, many of the sections within levels are repeated a handful of times.  The sound in Shoot Many Robots is fantastic and the guns you are using sound great. For example, the clinking of the robots being shot and exploding sound like you think they should.

You can play through the entirety of the game with three friends. I randomly jumped into a game and ended up getting into a game with three level 50s (level cap) playing on Insane. I was probably around level 15 at the time and I got killed every 30 seconds at least. You can revive a player when they go down, or if you are quick enough, you can drink a beer and give yourself some health. The people I was playing with were cool and they didn’t mind that I kept dying. I got lucky with the people I ended up joining with, but I would think that playing with friends would make the experience better.

Overall Shoot Many Robots is an extremely fun game, and the customization adds a layer of stuff to do. I have played through the entire story mode and played a handful of “Insane” levels online and I made it to level 36 of 50. If you are a completionist, you can go back to replay past levels to get all five stars which are gotten by getting high combos. There are plenty of things to do in Shoot Many Robots, and if you get a group of friends together, it will be a ton of fun.
